Business model

Wikiation is specialized in knowledge management for a wide variety of people and organizations, with the help of Wikiboxes. For this, Wikiation developed Wikibox Blue, which is based upon the open-source MediaWiki-software (which was originally developed for Wikipedia). A Wikibox can either have public, or restricted access.

• Wikiation offers a Wikibox as a SaaS model - Wikiation's support fees are always independent of the number of users or pages;
• Wikiation offers consultancy services - advice possible on knowledge management in general, or specifically with regards to the Wikibox Blue.

Wikiation's philosophy and general policies

Wikibox

1. A Wikibox is a user-friendly tool for collaborative writing and knowledge management;
2. Wikiation continually develops and tests new extensions and other new functionalities for the Wikibox Blue;
3. Wikibox Blue is an extensively tested, stable MediaWiki environment;
4. Wikiation develops general software for Wikibox Blue, not custom solutions for specific clients;
5. If really needed, more extensions can be implemented, yet only after these have been extensively tested and accepted by Wikiation to maintain its quality standards.

The costs of Wikiboxes

1. Wikiation sells standard subscriptions to Wikiboxes;
2. Extra personalized service is possible at hourly fees.

Ownership of the contents of Wikiboxes

1. Customers of Wikiation remain themselves the owners of all content in a Wikiation Wikibox;
2. Wikiation will not sell, neither directly nor indirectly, any content of a customer's Wikibox;
3. Migrating away from Wikiation's services is always possible with minimum costs (Dutch: "transactiekosten"). There will be no vendor blocking or locking. Wikiation is convinced it is better for all parties if customers stay for a positive reason, not because leaving is made too expensive.
4. Wikiation will not advertise on your Wikibox. The attention of the users of your Wikibox is all yours.

In this way Wikiation can afford to offer very high quality at a low price.

Wikiation and the open source community

As the open source MediaWiki community is what partly makes Wikiation and the Wikibox Blue possible, Wikiation yearly donated a small part of its income to the MediaWiki community until 2010. The Dutch WM-NL looses track of its own objectives specially after the choice of a new member of the board on September 9th 2010. So Wikiation has decided to suspend the donation and hopes donation can be resumed as soon as possible. Wikiation may sometimes release minor parts of its proprietary software as open source, but remains credited.

By publishing this public business model, Wikiation means to be crystal-clear about its intentions, corporate philosophy and vision.

Open market strategy

Unfortunately open intentions and open business models are a rare phenomenon, also in the open source world. Wikiation wonders why in many cases organizations do not allow others to know what really drives them. Why hiding one's intentions from potential customers and other relations? Wikiation is a company, so needs an income, and at the same time we prefer to explain our intentions and business model openly.
